Hellenic Adult Education Association (HAEΑ) is a scientific non-profit association and is seated in the city of Athens, Greece. HAEA today has approximately 900 members, mainly adult trainers, students of postgraduate diplomas in adult education and high school teachers.

 

On May 28th-29th, 2011 organizes in Athens, in collaboration with Teachers College of Columbia University the 9th International Transformative Learning Conference.

  1. MISSION OF THE ASSOCIATION

The mission of the association is the elaboration of the scientific thought, action, research, information and the dialogue for Adult Education. More specifically, the aims of the Association are mainly the following:

  1. The promotion of the philosophy and the principles of Adult Education.
  2. The elaboration of the scientific thought, the dialogue and co-operation on issues related to Adult Education.
  3. The development of initiatives in the sector of research..
  4. The support of initiatives for the application of innovative plans for adult education and training.
  5. The provision of consultation services.
  6. The cooperation with other similar international associations, scientific societies, institutes, research centres, universities, private and public entities.
  7. The professional development of its members.
  8. The development of solidarity, collegiality, as well as of the common professional consciousness among its members.
  9. The promotion and protection of the scientific, educational and professional interests of its members.
  10. The development of a general conscious awareness and information of the wider public about Adult Education issues and in general the diffusion of Adult Education in Greece and abroad.
  1. MEANS FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MISSION

The following means are quoted indicatively:

  • Organisation of public discussions, seminars, congresses and other similar events, as well as the participation in respective international events.
  • Undertaking and assignment of studies, conducting of scientific researches, observation of the movement of ideas, of scientific achievements and experiences, in Greece and abroad.
  • Undertaking of tutoring or training programs, of plans for the education of trainers and of other educating activities.
  • Consultative support to public and private entities, as well as to persons, who are functioning in the field of Adult Education.
  • Publication of books and production of printed, audio-visual and electronic scientific, teaching and informative material. 
  • Creation of data bases.
  • Co-operation with Greek and International similar bodies.
  • Operation of Libraries and in general any other activity, which may serve the objects of the Association.
  1. EUROPEAN & INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
  1. E-MODE

HAEA is a partner in the European Program “E-MODE: Engage trainers in learning MODules and matErial creation” within the context of the GRUNDTVIG program of the European Union. The program is based on pedagogical approaches stating that ArtBased Learning helps the learners to develop their creative skills and their capacity of critical thinking.

  1. RETRO

HAEA also participates in the GRUNDTVIG program “Relational Elements on the Teaching Role”. The program contributes to exchange of ideas, theories and practices among adult educators and adult education organizations

  1. EQUAL – SYN PRAXIS

HAEA was a partner in the European Community initiative EQUAL: “Syn Praxis – Collaboration for employment”
The program, completed in 2007, focused on the upgrade of professional qualification of Employment Advisors who work with sensitive social groups.

  1. International Conferences:
  • 1st International Conference of Adult Education, Athens, 22-23 October 2004. Among the speakers were Sally Brown, Peter Jarvis, Phil Race, Alan Rogers.
  • 2nd International Conference “Adult Education & Social Competences”, Athens, 16-18 December 2005. Among the speakers were Olesen Henning Salling.
  • 3rd International Conference “Adult Educators: Their Education and Professionalization”: It will take place in Piraeus, 14-16 March 2008. Among the speakers there will be Brian Findsen and representatives of the Swedish organization ABF.

  1. NATIONAL ACTIVITIES
  1. Accreditation of Greek Trainers of Continuing Vocational Training.

National project under the auspices of The Minister of Employment and Social Protection.
Members of the HAEA, most of them scientists cooperating with the Greek Open University, one of the partners who undertook the project, worked under the guidance of Pr A. Kokkos, President of HAEA and Professor of Greek Open University in Adult Education. They researched the training needs, designed the training program and the training material, while some members of HAEA were certified as Trainers of Trainers and others as Evaluators. The program is still in progress and 14.000 Adult Educators have been trained or are about to be trained (300 hours) and hopefully accredited (enter the register of EKEPIS, The National Accreditation Centre for Continuing Vocational Training).

  1. 2004-2010 Seminars
  • 5 one-day seminars with Jack Mezirow, Jane Thomson, Colin Grifin, Peter Jarvis, Knud Illeris
  • Train the trainer seminars (focusing on participating methods and techniques in adult education)
  • Workshops for adult trainers and high school teachers (focusing on communication and communication skills)
  • 8 seminars “Theory and Applications of Transformative Learning”
  • Preconference activities in Athens and Thessaloniki with Michel Alhadeff-Jones on Transformative Learning.

 

  1. PUBLICATIONS:
  1. The scientific Journal “Adult Education” (20 volumes published already): It is the only scientific journal for adult education issues in Greece. The International Advisory Committee of the journal is formed by scientists with general recognition within international scientific milieu of Adult Education.   1. SPECIALIZATION

The Board of Directors belong to the scientific field of Adult Education and among other activities they contributed to the development of the national program for the accreditation of Greek Trainers. Thus HAEA is specialized in Train the Trainers seminars (short/long seminars, in the classroom/ classroom & e-learning). An indicative program may include: Adult Education Principles, designing methods of teaching material, participating teaching methods and techniques, communication, team dynamics, evaluation techniques, presentations (short tuitions) of participants
